The Bananacoast Community Credit Union, or BCU, offers a debit card in conjunction with VISA.
The debit card is linked to a savings account with the Bananacoast Community Credit Union. This means that any purchase that is made with the debit card is automatically taken from the savings account. This works in a different way from a credit card where there is a separate account on which interest can build up.
As the debit card is a VISA card it can be used wherever a VISA credit card is accepted. This can include on line transactions, mail order, over the phone purchases and overseas purchases.
The card can also be used at ATMs and for EFTPOS transactions. The BCU VISA debit card can be used for free on the Bananacoast Community Credit Union network – which is mostly based in New South Wales and Queensland – and also includes ATMs that are part of the Westpac network. The debit card can also be used on other cash banks ‘and credit unions’ machines, although fees could apply.
The Bananacoast Community Credit Union was originally set up by small business owners in the NSW north coast, where it still has a strong presence that now extends to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. As a credit union it is not owned by shareholders and so can plough back all its profits back into the business itself.
The debit card is backed by VISA. This means that it can be accepted all over the world wherever VISA is accepted. Currently this is in almost 30 million outlets around the world. VISA operates a foreign currency translation service which means that any goods can be paid for in foreign currency and will still be charged in Australian Dollars.
The VISA “zero liability guarantee” is also available on the Bananacoast Community Credit Union VISA debit card. This guarantees that the card holder will not have to bear any liability for an unauthorised transaction, which includes transactions done through theft of the card or card fraud. This depends upon the card holder telling the Bananacoast Community Credit Union about the transaction in a timely manner. It also relies on the card holder not having aided the unauthorised transaction by, for example, lending their debit card.

December 3, 2019When i got fuel today my visa debit was too close to the machine and used pay wave which i dont want. Can i get it deactivated?

December 31, 2019Hi Ricki, don’t believe you can as Visa payWave uses an embedded computer chip in the card itself. You can contact bcu directly or alternatively read more information about payWave here.

October 12, 2014Can I pay on credit if I have no funds and return the money when I get paid next week?
Amy
October 14, 2014Hey Vincent, if you have a credit card you can definitely do that. With a debit card, selecting “credit” doesn’t really change where the money comes from. You could ask BCU if they have an account that offers and overdraft service (which gives you access to extra funds when you need them), although there are fees associated with that service.
If you go over your bank account balance, BCU only charges $0.50 for declined eftpos transactions and $1 for declined ATM transactions. You can see other fees here: http://www.bcu.com.au/images/pdfs/general/fees_charges_schedule.pdf

April 22, 2010Please refer to the website http://www.bcu.com.au/ to correct the details of this post. BCU is based in Macksville NSW where it was originally established by NSW Banana Growers, not Queensland.
